South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, impeached over his controversial declaration of martial law on December 3, faces an ongoing investigation into allegations of insurrection.
Axar.az reports that he was arrested last week, becoming the first sitting president in the country's history to be detained.
Despite attempts by investigators to question him, Yoon has repeatedly refused to comply, leading to further legal actions. His detention triggered violent protests, with dozens of his supporters storming the Seoul Western District Court, clashing with police and damaging property. Police detained 90 individuals, with 66 facing charges related to trespassing, obstruction, and assault. The unrest has led to heightened political and economic instability, with the South Korean central bank lowering its 2025 growth forecast due to the ongoing crisis.
The violence at the court building, including the breaking into judges’ chambers, has deepened the political turmoil.
Yoon's legal team argues that the arrest and the investigation are illegal, citing jurisdictional issues and the lack of legal authority for the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO). While Yoon may face charges of insurrection, a crime punishable by death, he expressed regret over the violence and urged his supporters to protest peacefully. Despite the political chaos, Yoon plans to attend future impeachment hearings, and his case continues to draw attention as it tests the limits of presidential immunity in South Korea.
