The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has officially launched the first medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV), USX-1 Defiant.

Axar.az reports that USX-1 Defiant is designed to operate autonomously for extended periods at sea, eliminating the need for onboard human presence. This innovation leads to significant advantages in size, cost reduction, hydrodynamic efficiency, and stealth technology, enhancing both survivability and operational effectiveness.

At 55 metres long and weighing 240 metric tons, Defiant represents a significant step in redefining naval architecture. The ship was constructed with notable contributions from Serco North America but currently lacks installed mission or combat systems.

DARPA plans to commence dockside and at-sea testing of Defiant, with a scheduled multi-month demonstration set for spring 2025. Following successful trials, the vessel will be handed over to the Surface Development Group (SURFDEVGRU) and PMS 406 for further operational integration.
