Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been taken into custody by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands following his dramatic arrest in Manila. He was detained over his controversial anti-drugs campaign, which resulted in thousands of deaths.
Axar.az, citing CNN, reports that Duterte was flown out of the Philippines late Tuesday, with a stopover in Dubai, before arriving in Rotterdam on Wednesday. His daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, criticized the arrest, calling it "oppression and persecution," while his youngest daughter, Veronica, shared her concerns about his health.
The ICC has charged Duterte with crimes against humanity, specifically murder, for actions between 2011 and 2019. His arrest follows years of investigation into extrajudicial killings linked to his war on drugs. Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. confirmed the arrest, citing commitments to Interpol.
While Duterte remains popular in some circles, families of victims welcomed the arrest, calling it the start of a long journey toward justice. His case is expected to go through an initial hearing at The Hague soon.
