The United States struck three key Iranian nuclear sites, Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, in a major escalation of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.
The specifications of Iran’s three major nuclear facilities targeted in the strikes:
Natanz Enrichment Facility
Iran’s primary uranium enrichment site, located ~220 km southeast of Tehran. Site previously enriched uranium up to 60%, near weapons-grade. Includes underground centrifuge halls, now reportedly destroyed by Israeli strikes that cut power. Natanz has been attacked before by cyberattacks (Stuxnet) and airstrikes.
Fordow Enrichment Facility
Located ~100 km southwest of Tehran and buried deep under a mountain. Hosts uranium centrifuges in fortified underground bunkers. Highly protected, only vulnerable to “bunker-buster” bombs like the GBU-57A/B dropped by U.S. B-2 bombers. Targeted due to its role in high-level uranium enrichment and its hardened structure.
Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center
A major nuclear research hub ~350 km southeast of Tehran. Home to thousands of nuclear scientists, Chinese-built research reactors, and a uranium conversion facility. Israeli strikes previously hit the site; no radiation leaks reported.
Other Sites (Not Targeted in This Strike):
Bushehr: Iran’s only commercial nuclear power plant, monitored by the IAEA and fueled by Russian uranium.
Arak: Heavy water reactor, redesigned under the 2015 nuclear deal to reduce weaponization risk.
Tehran Research Reactor: Used for research and medical isotopes; modified to use low-enriched uranium.
This attack marks the first direct U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, aiming to cripple Iran’s ability to produce nuclear weapons and push Tehran back to the negotiation table.
In an interview later that evening on Fox News’ Sean Hannity Show, Trump revealed that six bunker-buster bombs had been dropped on Fordow, while 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles had hit the other two sites. He echoed the same on Truth Social:
“A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow,” he wrote. “Fordow is gone.”
A senior US defence official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, said that B-2 stealth bombers, the only aircraft capable of delivering the 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, were used in the mission.
