The spread of the new monkeypox (mpox) virus can be prevented.

Axar.az reports that this was stated by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, during a briefing.

He noted that this requires coordinated action among international agencies, national and local partners, civil society, researchers, manufacturers, and our member states.

The Director-General added that more than 100,000 confirmed cases of "mpox" have been recorded by WHO since 2022, with an unprecedented increase in the virus observed in Africa.

"In 2024, 90% of recorded cases occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This year alone, more than 16,000 people have contracted the disease, including 575 deaths."

Tedros Ghebreyesus emphasized that WHO is working extensively with international, regional, national, and local partners to increase preparedness and strengthen coordination of response measures against the virus, noting that the organization's Africa Regional Office ("Africa CDC") will lead this process in collaboration with governments.
