The number of cancer patients under 50 has increased worldwide. According to American researchers, nearly 40% of all cancer cases are related to various lifestyle factors.
Axar.az reports that scientists from the American Cancer Society conducted a study involving 135,000 people. The findings presented in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) suggest that alcohol is one of the factors contributing to the rise in patient numbers in recent years. A higher rate of cancer deaths is observed among those who consume alcohol lightly to moderately compared to those who drink rarely.
Thus, the myth that small amounts of alcohol, such as for heart health, can be beneficial is debunked. Even small doses pose risks, particularly to the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and breast.
Research shows that even just one glass of wine a day increases the risk of breast cancer.
However, according to Susan Larsson, an epidemiologist from the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University, the risk of developing cancer is undoubtedly higher when there is overweight or obesity compared to moderate alcohol consumption. "Obesity affects various hormones, and some of these hormones accelerate cancer development," she noted.
Other factors that may contribute to the rising cancer rates among young people include dietary habits and exercise. It is well known that a lack of physical activity and a diet rich in fats and processed foods are risk factors for cancer development.
