Why Pashinyan is skipping Davos, analyst explains

The Davos Economic Forum will begin on January 19, with discussions and meetings lasting four days. U.S. President Donald Trump will arrive in Davos with a large delegation.

Axar.az reports that political analyst Elkhan Shahinoglu stated this.

He said it is possible to predict that the main political topics in Davos will be Ukraine and Greenland:

“Trump has things to say to Europeans on these issues. There is relative calm in Gaza; the next stage will involve governance and reconstruction of the region. Europeans are not eager to discuss this topic because Trump controls the Gaza agenda, and his main partners on this issue are Asian countries.

In Davos, Trump will meet with leaders of various countries, and it is likely that the White House leader will also have contact with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who will attend the forum.”

The analyst noted that the absence of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan from the Davos Economic Forum is noteworthy:

“Usually, he does not refuse to attend major international events. Yet in Davos he could have shared his views with a wide audience on expanding peace-building with Azerbaijan, including opportunities for his country to join regional transport projects. Apparently, Pashinyan’s full attention is focused on the parliamentary elections scheduled for June this year, and he needs to devote most of his time to weakening his domestic rivals.

Another factor discouraging Pashinyan from traveling to Davos may be the discussion of Russia, as in previous years. At Davos meetings and discussions, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is condemned. Pashinyan is not eager to speak on this issue. Last year in Davos, he struggled to answer a question about whether Armenia would choose the European Union or Russia. Apparently, he does not want to face a similar question again.

The tense situation in Iran may also be discussed in Davos, and Pashinyan does not want to voice criticism toward Armenia’s southern neighbor.”
