Trump rejects Putin offer of one-year extension New START

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to voluntarily extend New START nuclear deployment limits for one year after the treaty’s expiration.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that Trump said instead that the U.S. should pursue a new, broader nuclear arms agreement, ideally including China.

New START, signed in 2010, capped each side at 1,550 nuclear warheads on 700 delivery systems and was the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow. It expired after a single five-year extension agreed in 2021.

Trump called the treaty “badly negotiated” and accused Russia of violating it, citing Moscow’s 2023 decision to halt inspections—a move Russia justified by pointing to U.S. support for Ukraine. Arms control advocates warn the treaty’s collapse could accelerate a nuclear arms race, while critics argue it restricted U.S. deterrence capabilities.

Despite rejecting the extension, both sides signaled openness to talks, and the United Nations urged a swift return to negotiations.
