One year has passed since the historic Aug. 8, 2025 meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, US President Donald Trump, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Axar.az reports that the leaders of the three countries signed a Joint Declaration on the outcomes of the Washington talks on that date.

The document states that Aliyev, Pashinyan and Trump witnessed the initialing by the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia of the agreed text of the "Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia." It also emphasized that additional steps were needed for the signing and final ratification of the agreement.

The meeting, held with the participation of US President Donald Trump, is considered one of the most important steps toward normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The Joint Declaration affirmed the parties' commitment to the peace agenda and their readiness to build relations on the principles of international law.

The document stressed the inadmissibility of the use or threat of force and highlighted the importance of building the region's future on cooperation and mutual respect.

One of the key provisions of the declaration was the parties' stated intention to close the chapter of hostility created by the former conflict.

The document also emphasized that revanchism would not be tolerated and that future relations would be based on peace and cooperation. This approach was viewed as an important political message aimed at fostering an environment of trust in the region.

The initialing of the text of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was regarded as a major breakthrough in the years-long negotiation process and as an important stage toward establishing the legal foundations for a future peace treaty.

Following the Washington meeting, the OSCE Minsk Group formally ceased its activities at the joint request of Azerbaijan and Armenia. After the agreement was initialed, restrictions on cargo transit from Azerbaijan to Armenia were lifted, allowing shipments such as Russian and Kazakh wheat to be transported to Armenia through Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan also began supplying its oil products to Armenia.

Preparatory work on the TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity) project also accelerated following the Washington meeting. Technical and infrastructure preparations have continued for the implementation of a transport route connecting mainland Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan. Azerbaijan has expanded the construction of road and railway infrastructure on its territory.

During the past year, an Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev visited Armenia. In April this year, the parties agreed on draft instructions for the delimitation process.

Thus, the document signed in Washington has gone down in history not only as a significant factor in normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but also as a strategic political development for the region's security, economic development, and prospects for international cooperation.

The Washington meeting has also been viewed by the international community as an important diplomatic step toward strengthening stability in the South Caucasus. Experts believe the document has created an important legal and political foundation for continuing direct dialogue between the parties, expanding opportunities for regional connectivity and economic cooperation, and moving toward the signing of a final peace agreement.
