Putin, Security Council discuss Syrian settlement

Russian President Vladimir Putin and permanent members of the Russian Security Council positively valued the ongoing restoration of control over Syria’s territory on the part of the armed forces of this country.

The head of state and the Security Council members discussed this issue, as well as a number of domestic issues, on Friday at a briefing session, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov reported.

"Some international issues, including the situation in Syria, were discussed along with current issues on the Russian domestic socio-economic agenda," he said. "At the meeting, positive evaluation was given to the ongoing extension of the territory under the control of the Syrian armed forces and the role of this process for further settlement," Peskov highlighted.

Putin also congratulated the permanent members of the Security Council on the coming New Year.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, speakers of both parliamentary chambers Valentina Matviyenko and Vyacheslav Volodin, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Director of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov and Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin, as well as Special Presidential Representative for Nature Protection, Ecology and Transport Issues Sergei Ivanov.
