The low voter turnout in the referendum in Moldova and the results are not particularly surprising. This is because the Moldovan people have serious doubts about joining the EU. Secondly, a strong opposition to the central government has formed in the Gagauzia region. People doubt that Moldova will meet the necessary conditions to join the EU in the near future.

Axar.az reports that these remarks were made by Turkish analyst Engin Ozer while commenting on the results of the referendum in Moldova and the West's reaction to it.

He stated that the sharply low turnout in the referendum is related to people's lack of trust:

“Additionally, due to the Ukraine war, people are wary of the EU. Overall, although the referendum resulted in a narrow ‘yes’ for the EU, there is a preference for a significant majority to express approval for such serious decisions. Some Western sources evaluate these results as the outcome of a ‘disinformation campaign,’ which is indeed prevalent on both sides, including in the West itself. For example, regarding Georgia, the West is in opposition to the ruling party there, directly intervening in the country’s domestic politics, manipulating it, and issuing threats. In Moldova, on the other hand, the government is pro-Western. In this sense, the situation in Moldova is ‘more hopeful.’ However, there are serious doubts among the people about the EU’s future, which is why half of the country does not want the EU.”

The referendum has been held and concluded. I do not believe that the EU's reaction will cause any problems. Ultimately, I think the likelihood of Moldova joining the EU in the near future is quite weak.”

It should be noted that in the referendum held in Moldova on Sunday, only 50.4 percent of voters supported EU membership. Some Western publications assess this result as evidence that Russia was able to “buy off” a significant number of Moldovan voters, and numerous statements have circulated about the miraculous outcome that the pro-Russian camp did not win.
