I have always had doubts about the reliability of the current Armenian leadership. And when everyone, in unison, says that a peace agreement will be signed soon, I doubt it.
Axar.az reports this was stated by Russian political scientist Yevgeny Mikhaylov while commenting on the provocative actions of the Armenian Armed Forces, which, for several days in a row, have been opening fire on Azerbaijani military positions amid statements from both sides about the completion of negotiations on the terms of the peace treaty.
"Pashinyan has always made contradictory moves and statements. Today he says, 'We are ready to sign a peace agreement,' and tomorrow there is some provocation on the border with Azerbaijan. In this case, Armenia is trying to keep the Zangezur Corridor under its control by force. This is my personal opinion: the agreement on the peace text is the result of increased pressure on Yerevan from the international community. Perhaps their tactic here is similar to that of the Ukrainians: 'While the big uncles are negotiating, they will help resolve everything, and we’ll continue to harm our enemy.' In any case, Armenia is not a country that keeps its promises and agreements," he said.
According to Mikhaylov, even if a peace agreement is signed, it is far from certain that it will be long-lasting:
"Because in Armenia itself, there are enough ultranationalist movements that call for revenge against Azerbaijan. Pashinyan’s balancing act between these forces, between certain more moderate groups and openly Nazi elements, will lead to nothing good. Here, Pashinyan must show strong will and punish such actions. For example, after this shelling, it would be interesting to see how Pashinyan punishes Armenian soldiers for the provocation. Only then will we see that Armenia truly wants peace. Until this happens, all these are just empty words. And again, just because there is a statement about peace, it does not mean it will come."
