There is de facto peace in the South Caucasus region.
Axar.az reports that Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of the Department of Foreign Policy Affairs of the Presidential Administration, said this in an interview with Tasnim.
“The five principles that form the basis of the peace agreement on the normalization of relations with Armenia, and even the text of this document, were drawn up by Baku, by Azerbaijan, and presented to the Armenian side. This is another clear manifestation of how committed and supportive Azerbaijan is to the regional peace agenda,” he said.
At the same time, he recalled that work on the text of the peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan has been completed:
“It is a positive fact that the text of the peace agreement has been completed. However, at the same time, there are open issues with Armenia on a bilateral basis. We believe that Armenia should end all territorial claims against Azerbaijan on constitutional grounds so that we can achieve lasting, definitive peace in the region.”
In his opinion, favorable conditions for peace have now been formed in the South Caucasus region:
“But we can say with satisfaction that since Azerbaijan and Armenia gained their independence, ideal conditions for peace have been created in the region today. Indeed, there is peace and stability in the region. We can even say that, de facto, there is peace in the region. Azerbaijan will do its part to put this into a legal framework so that complete and lasting peace is established in the region.”
