Climate change triggers nine-day seismic wave

68 seismologists from 15 countries have determined the origin of a seismic wave recorded worldwide in September 2023, which lasted for nine days.

Axar.az reports that the mysterious event was identified using field measurements, satellite images, and computer modeling.

The study, published in the journal Science, notes that the cause of the tremor, accompanied by a monotonous hum from the Earth, was a mountain peak collapsing into Dixon Fjord in eastern Greenland, which triggered a tsunami. The standing wave oscillated from shore to shore within the fjord's enclosed space.

Research has shown that climate change was a driving factor in this event, as a melting glacier that stabilized the mountain slope collapsed into the sea.

"This seismic signal, observed for such a long period, had never been recorded before. Global warming may lead to events we have never seen before. In glaciated areas, global warming not only causes ice to break and disappear but also destabilizes mountain slopes. It is likely that new landslides and tsunamis await us in Greenland's fjords," the researchers stated.
