Today marks the third Tuesday of the Novruz celebrations – Wind Tuesday.

Axar.az reports the warm winds blowing on Wind Tuesday signal the arrival of spring.

According to beliefs, the awakened wind on this Tuesday travels around the world, sets the awakened water and fire in motion, and gives new breath to everything. That is why this Tuesday is popularly called the “windy Tuesday.”

On Wind Tuesday evening, bonfires are lit in every yard and neighborhood. People gather around the bonfire and take turns jumping over it three times. This is done with the intention of getting rid of troubles, misfortunes and disasters, and cleansing oneself of sins.

On Wind Tuesday, preparations are also made for the last Tuesday and for Novruz. Homes and yards are cleaned and traditional sweets are prepared.

According to Azerbaijani mythological beliefs, the wind also serves as a guide that shows the way.

It should be noted that the last Tuesday — Earth Tuesday — will be celebrated on March 17.
