TURKPA supports Azerbaijan’s decision on EU parliament ties

The Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TURKPA) has supported the decision adopted today by the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan to officially suspend all forms of cooperation with the European Parliament, end participation in the EU–Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and initiate procedures to withdraw from the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.

Axar.az informs that TURKPA issued a statement on the matter.

The statement says the decision was taken as a result of what it described as the European Parliament’s persistent, biased, and unfounded approach toward Azerbaijan in recent years.

It claims that over the past six years, the European Parliament has adopted a hostile stance toward Azerbaijan and has passed more than 10 politically motivated documents targeting the country, including a recent resolution dated April 30, 2026.

It further states that such positions disregard fundamental principles such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs, and are contrary to the peace and normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The statement emphasizes that parliamentary assemblies should serve as platforms for constructive dialogue and good-faith cooperation, including with non-member states.

It also criticizes the European Parliament for failing to demonstrate genuine engagement and instead focusing on targeting Azerbaijan, calling on it to refrain from such practices in order not to undermine inter-parliamentary relations.
