The draft law “On the approval of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Gas Sector between Turkiye and Azerbaijan” has been included in the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for discussion.

Axar.az reports that the consideration of the draft law was approved by the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmush.

The intergovernmental agreement was signed in Istanbul on May 14, 2024, to deepen mutual relations between Azerbaijan and Turkiye in the energy sector.

After the draft law was discussed in the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament under the chairmanship of Fuat Oktay on January 16, a corresponding report was prepared.

The committee emphasized that several other successful projects have been implemented between Turkiye and Azerbaijan, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, the Trans-Anatolian pipeline, and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.

“Azerbaijan makes a significant contribution to meeting the needs of Turkiye's energy carriers. "This creates conditions for strengthening Ankara's leading role in ensuring the energy security of the countries of the region," the report of the TBMM committee noted.

It was noted that the normative act is of particular importance in diversifying the energy supply sources of Turkiye and European countries, as well as providing gas to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The agreement also envisages cooperation between Baku and Ankara on joint investments in the energy sector.

The draft law "On the approval of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Gas Sector between Turkiye and Azerbaijan" was sent to the Turkish Parliament on December 27 last year with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
