A man has been charged with the murder of a Saudi student in UK’s Cambridge, after fatally stabbing him in what police described as an “unprovoked” attack, authorities announced Monday.
Axar.az informs, citing Al Arabiya, the statement identified the victim as 20-year-old Mohammed Algasim.
“A 21-year-old man, from Cambridge, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. He is due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court today,” the police statement said.
It added that another 50-year-old man, also from Cambridge, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. The man remains in custody, police noted.
According to Al Arabiya, Algasim was killed while walking to his accommodation.
“Police were called to Mill Park at 11.27pm on Friday (1 August) with reports of violence,” the police statement said.
It added that despite the efforts of paramedics, Algasim was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, August 2. Authorities noted that Algasim was on a 10-week placement studying in Cambridge.
“A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday however it is believed he was stabbed in an unprovoked attack.”
