Kazakhstan approves law banning LGBT propaganda

The Mejlis (lower house of parliament) of Kazakhstan has approved amendments to the legislation that prohibit "propaganda of pedophilia and non-traditional sexual orientation" in the country.

Axar.az reports that the changes cover nine laws, including those on children's rights, advertising, communications, culture, education, cinema, media, and online platforms.

LGBT propaganda in public places, in the media, and on the Internet will be punishable by a fine of up to 40 times the minimum monthly wage or up to ten days in prison.

The law must be approved by the Senate and signed by the President of Kazakhstan to enter into force.

It should be noted that the draft law banning LGBT propaganda in Kazakhstan has already been criticized by many human rights organizations. For example, Human Rights Watch stated that the proposed amendments violate fundamental human rights.
