Following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a possible strike on Iran, Iran's Supreme National Security Council held an emergency meeting at night of January 2.
Axar.az reports that the New York Times newspaper wrote about this, citing sources.
It was reported that the main topic of the meeting was the suppression of protests with minimal violence to prevent mass unrest. Scenarios of possible military attacks were also discussed.
According to the sources, against the backdrop of the ongoing protests, senior government officials admitted in closed discussions that the Islamic Republic is fighting for its survival. It was noted that the authorities have limited means to respond to both the economic crisis and the increasing social tensions and the threat of escalating conflict with Israel and the United States.
It was also emphasized that the President of the Islamic Republic, Masoud Pezeshkian, held two emergency meetings with the Economic Advisory Committee last week to discuss possible steps if the situation worsens.
It should be noted that nationwide protests in Iran have spread to almost the entire country and are continuing in 78 cities. The death toll in these protests is also rising: according to the latest reports, the number of injured has exceeded 50.
