The Mexican army killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
Axar.az, citing AP, reports that following his death, widespread violence erupted across 20 Mexican states: cartel members set fire to vehicles, blocked roads at more than 250 points, and disrupted daily life, with Guadalajara effectively shutting down.
Twenty-five National Guard members were killed in six separate attacks, along with a prison guard, a state prosecutor’s agent, and a woman. Authorities reported at least 30 cartel suspects killed in Jalisco and additional deaths in Michoacán. Schools were canceled, and residents and tourists were stranded or forced to shelter in place.
President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm and confirmed that all roadblocks had been cleared.
Analysts warned the death could trigger further violence as rival criminal groups seek to exploit the CJNG’s temporary weakening.
Oseguera Cervantes, a top trafficker of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, died while being transported to Mexico City after being wounded in the raid.
The U.S. provided intelligence support, and White House officials hailed the operation as a major blow to one of the world’s most dangerous criminal networks
