Ukraine’s war with Russia has now lasted longer than the First World War, which is a strategic failure by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Axar.az reports, citing the Telegraph, columnist Charles Moore noted that the conflict has reached 1,569 days, arguing that the duration alone represents “a reproach to Nato but, even more, a mark of Vladimir Putin’s failure.”
He said Russia still occupies roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, but added that the campaign has come at an enormous cost.
“Russia has lost 350,000–500,000 men dead, maybe three times more permanently out of action, without any definite victory or game-changing innovation,” Moore wrote.
Quoting analyst James Sherr, Moore said, “Russia is not collapsing but it is rotting.”
He also described the war as having fundamentally reshaped Ukraine’s military and national identity, arguing that Russia’s invasion “did not crush Ukraine – it ignited a fire in its people.” Moore wrote that Ukraine’s armed forces have become “among the most innovative and experienced on the planet,” particularly through the large-scale use of drones and decentralized battlefield command.
“The war landscape is transformed by drones, most of which are made in Ukraine at high speed and low cost,” he noted, adding that Ukrainian units are encouraged to experiment and adapt rapidly on the battlefield.
Moore concluded that Ukraine’s resistance has altered the broader European security landscape, arguing that Kyiv has undermined Moscow’s expectations of a swift victory and reshaped regional defense dynamics.
