Armenian opposition candidate detained

David Ghazinyan, a parliamentary candidate from businessman Samvel Karapetyan’s Strong Armenia Alliance, has been detained on suspicion of preparing to distribute election bribes.

Axar.az reports, citing Armenian media, the Central Electoral Commission had earlier approved the Prosecutor’s Office’s requests to initiate criminal proceedings against Ghazinyan and to obtain permission for his detention.

He was detained after the decision was made.

The Anti-Corruption Committee said it had uncovered an alleged election bribery case involving members of the Strong Armenia Alliance and subsequently requested that the Prosecutor’s Office seek the CEC’s approval for criminal proceedings and Ghazinyan’s detention.
