France condemns Iran over detention of embassy staff

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has condemned the brief detention of two French embassy staff members in Iran, calling it a serious violation of diplomatic immunity.

Axar.az reports that Barrot made the remarks in a statement posted on X.

According to the minister, the two diplomats were detained by Iranian security services on Sunday evening without explanation, questioned for several hours, and one of them was physically assaulted. They later returned safely to the French Embassy and are expected to travel back to France in the coming hours.

Barrot said the incident was particularly alarming because the two officials oversee France's support programs for Iranian civil society, including artists and scientists.

He praised the diplomats for their courage and reaffirmed France's commitment to supporting the Iranian people.

The French foreign minister also said he had informed his Iranian counterpart that the "extremely serious and unacceptable" treatment of French diplomatic personnel would "not go without consequences."
