U.S. Navy strikes vessel attempting to reach Iran

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces disabled the steering gear of a Panama-flagged cargo vessel as it attempted to transit the Gulf of Oman toward an Iranian port in violation of the U.S. blockade against Iran.

Axar.az reports, citing CENTCOM, that a U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the engine room of the M/V Vela Nova after its civilian crew ignored repeated warnings from U.S. forces.

“The ship is no longer transiting to Iran in violation of the U.S. blockade, which remains in full effect,” CENTCOM said in a statement posted on X.

According to CENTCOM, U.S. forces have redirected 55 commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade, disabled three non-compliant vessels and boarded two as of Aug. 11.

“U.S. forces operating in the Middle East are highly vigilant, lethal, and ready,” the command added.
