The stabbing of a police officer at a U.S. airport is being investigated as a terrorist attack, the FBI said late Wednesday.

Axar.az reports citing AA, Lt. Jeff Neville was stabbed in the neck while on duty at Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan, earlier Wednesday. He is in a stable condition.

The suspected attacker -- Amor Ftouhi, a 50-year-old Canadian citizen -- allegedly stabbed Neville while shouting “Allahu Akbar”, Arabic for “God is great”.

He is also alleged to have said something similar to “You have killed people in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and we are all going to die” as he was arrested.

Detroit's FBI Chief David Gelios said: “Suffice to say, he has a hatred for the United States.”

Ftouhi has been charged with committing a violent act in an airport, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported. He faces up to 20 years in prison and further charges could be added.

According to the FBI, Ftouhi legally entered the U.S. on June 16.
