On Thursday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans to ban children under 16 from using social media, citing the harmful effects of platforms like Facebook and TikTok on young people.

Axar.az reports that, citing AFP, Albanese stated that tech companies would be held accountable for enforcing the age restriction, with significant fines imposed if regulators find that underage users are still accessing the platforms.

"This is for the mums and dads. Social media is causing real harm to our kids, and it's time to put a stop to it," Albanese told reporters outside Parliament.

The proposed legislation will be presented to state and territory leaders this week, with plans to introduce it to Parliament by late November.
