36 countries vote against death penalty moratorium at UN

Iran voted against a draft resolution at the UN General Assembly calling for a moratorium on the death penalty.

Axar.az reports that the UN has provided this information.

In the vote, 131 countries supported the resolution, 36 voted against it, and 21 countries abstained.

Along with Iran, the United States, China, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Qatar, and North Korea also voted against the draft resolution.

It should be noted that between October 10, 2023, and October 10, 2024, Iran executed 811 prisoners. This is a 33% increase compared to the previous year.
