Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected U.S. counterpart Donald Trump’s “stop the war” proposal without waiting for the 10-day deadline given to him.

Axar.az reports that political analyst Elxan Shahinoglu commented on the development.

He emphasized that Putin’s logic is straightforward, especially after referring to Trump’s offer as “inflated expectations that didn’t materialize”:

“First, a ceasefire with Ukraine is impossible while Russia is expanding its offensive along the entire front line. Second, new U.S. sanctions do not concern the Kremlin. Even Trump, in one of his recent statements, said he might impose new sanctions on Russia but doubted their effectiveness. This statement further reinforced Putin’s argument that he is not afraid of sanctions. This means the war will continue, Ukrainian cities including Kyiv will keep being bombed, and civilians will continue to die.”

According to the analyst, Putin is trying to leverage Russia’s numerical advantage on the front lines:

“On the other hand, Russia has overcome setbacks in drone production. However, Putin’s policy of expanding occupied territories is proving very costly for Russia. The country loses thousands of soldiers every month, and the war has become a heavy burden on the national budget—something even those in charge of the economy have started to admit. Nevertheless, as long as Putin remains in power, he will not abandon his plan to break apart Ukraine.”
