Today, Azerbaijani gas will be delivered to Syria. By consuming Azerbaijani gas, Syria will become the 13th country to strengthen its energy security through this source. Previously, Azerbaijani gas was exported to 12 countries.
Axar.az reports that MP and economist Vugar Bayramov stated:
“Azerbaijani gas will be transmitted to Syria via the Kilis-Aleppo pipeline, which has a daily capacity of 6 million cubic meters. This means that the pipeline’s annual capacity can be increased to up to 2 billion cubic meters. Azerbaijani gas will be used to produce electricity in Aleppo, and nearly 1,200 megawatts of additional power generation is planned. Overall, Syria will be able to nearly double its domestic electricity supply by using Azerbaijani gas,” he said.
According to the MP, this contribution to Syria’s energy security will further strengthen Azerbaijan’s geopolitical position:
“Azerbaijan’s role in ensuring energy security is growing not only in the region and Europe but also in the Middle East.
One of the most significant contributions to regional energy security was the implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor. This corridor is considered one of the most crucial initiatives not only for the region but also for Europe. Its realization was made possible by the political will of President Ilham Aliyev. Although there were differing views during the discussions—regarding financing and the pipeline’s geographic route—Azerbaijan’s support helped implement a project deemed vital for both the region and the continent. Through the projects it has implemented, Azerbaijan ensures the delivery of natural gas to Turkiye, Europe, and now Syria. Thanks to President Ilham Aliyev’s political will, regional energy security has been further strengthened.
In general, the delivery of Azerbaijani gas to Syria is a historic event. After enduring years of civil war and destruction, Syria will now enhance its energy security in a new phase through Azerbaijani gas.”
