General-Colonel Nikolai Yurev has resigned from his position as head of the Military Counterintelligence Department of the FSB (Federal Security Service).

Axar.az reports that this was confirmed by two sources within the security forces to RBC.

The timing of his resignation, coming immediately after the death of Russian Army Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops Commander, General-Lieutenant Igor Kirillov, has drawn attention. One of the sources stated that the resignation is not related to Kirillov's death, and Yurev is retiring. It was claimed that the order for Yurev's dismissal was signed on December 16, a day before Kirillov's murder.

It is noted that Igor Kirillov was killed on December 17 by an explosion from a bomb placed near his car at his home. A 29-year-old Uzbek migrant, who is suspected of being involved in the attack, has been arrested.
