Khaled Pirzadeh, a political prisoner in Iran’s Evin Prison, attempted suicide by cutting his neck to protest the lack of adequate medical treatment.
Axar.az, citing human right activists news agency HERANA, reports that his wife, Zeinab Zobeidi, revealed on social media that the attempt was driven by the denial of vital medications and proper care. Although Pirzadeh was taken to a hospital for stitches, he was returned to prison shortly after.
This incident follows an audio message Pirzadeh released two days earlier, in which he detailed being denied hospital transfers and access to life-saving medications.
Arrested in Ahvaz in September 2023, Pirzadeh was moved from Ward 209, a Ministry of Intelligence detention facility, to Ward 6 of Evin Prison on October 15. In January 2024, he was sentenced to five years and eight months by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court under Judge Iman Afshari.
Pirzadeh has faced previous arrests and imprisonment for his activities. His case highlights ongoing concerns about political prisoners' conditions and access to basic rights in Iran.
