Mark Carney, former governor of the central banks of Canada and the UK, is gearing up to replace Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister of Canada.
Axar.az, citing Politico, reports that during a recent appearance on “The Daily Show,” Carney humorously framed himself as an “outsider” while addressing critical national challenges. He criticized the government’s handling of economic issues, including housing, the cost of living, and trade, calling for a sharper focus on these pressing concerns.
Trudeau’s announcement of his planned resignation after a new leader is chosen marks what Carney described as a necessary leadership transition.
Sources suggest Carney will officially launch his campaign later this week in Edmonton, Alberta, where he grew up.
Chrystia Freeland, the former Deputy Prime Minister, is also expected to announce her candidacy soon, reportedly planning a firm response to U.S. trade threats under Donald Trump’s administration.
The Liberal Party will select its new leader on March 9, 2025, with the winner set to face significant political challenges.
