Despite the calls of the Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, local elections in Georgia will be held in the fall of 2025.
Axar.az reports that this was said by the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze.
“This also reminds us of Ukrainization. You know that in Ukraine, although the term of office of specific public bodies expires, elections are not held. Everyone in Georgia must respect the Constitution and legislation. Local government bodies, mayors, sakrebulo (city councils) are elected for a four-year term, and naturally, this mandate must be renewed at the end of four years,” he told journalists, commenting on the appeal of the European body.
Recall that earlier, the Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe issued a statement calling on the Georgian government to comply with European standards in the field of human rights and democracy. The Bureau called on the authorities to postpone the elections to local self-government bodies scheduled for the fall of this year, justifying this by the fact that the elections could further aggravate the situation in the country in the current political situation.
