Russia and Iran have similar approaches to opening transport communications in the region.
Axar.az reports that these words were said by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on the statement of the Iranian Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Soubhani.
“This is confirmed in the agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Iran, signed in Moscow on January 17, 2025. The parties contribute to maintaining peace and security in neighboring regions, including the South Caucasus,” Zakharova said.
According to her, the only difference is that Russia is a member of the trilateral working group on the restoration of transport and economic ties in the South Caucasus with the participation of the deputy prime ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia:
“Within this group, great work has already been done to coordinate both the legal framework and technical parameters and restore transport routes between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The main principle of unblocking communications is to preserve the sovereignty and jurisdiction of states over routes passing through their territory. This condition was approved by both Baku and Yerevan. Unfortunately, due to the position of the Armenian side, the work of the group was frozen”.
He stressed that Russia is ready to restore full cooperation.
It should be noted that the Iranian ambassador stated at a press conference on February 6 that among the countries of the region, only Iran supports Armenia's position on the Zangezur corridor. Regarding Russia's position, he said: "Compare the positions of other countries with ours. If their position does not correspond to ours, then we have contradictions. For us, our national interests play a key role, we cannot make concessions or bargain for this."
