Muhammad Gantamirov 's outfit, worn during the U-20 Azerbaijan Championship in the 125 kg freestyle wrestling category, sparked a social media debate due to the Russian flag on his attire.
Axar.az reports that his participation in the national championship with a flag of another country has raised questions and criticism.
The spokesperson for the Wrestling Federation, Sarkhan Musali, stated that it is prohibited for athletes to compete with another country's flag at the national championship and explained that the Russian flag on Muhammad Gantamirov 's attire was covered beforehand:
"In fact, we have footage. The Russian flag on his attire was previously covered. However, the sticker placed over the flag later came off. The judges saw that the sticker had come off and covered it again. This happened very briefly in the final.
"He is the European silver medalist and World bronze medalist in the junior category, and he does have the proper attire. It's just that he ended up wearing this because he lost it. Had he informed us in advance, we would have provided him with the porper outfit. But since he didn't, this situation occurred."
