Grossi confirmed his intention to become UN Secretary-General

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed his intention to run for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).

Axar.az reports citing La Nacion, the position will become vacant in 2026 with the end of the mandate of Portuguese António Guterres.

"The process of selecting Guterres' successor has not started yet; it is a process that will begin at the end of this year when the corresponding call for candidacies takes place within the framework of the UN General Assembly," Grossi said. He then added, "I am considering it, and I am considering it very seriously. That’s all I can say at this moment."
