Hungary is withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC), with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán calling the country’s membership “half-hearted” and labeling the court a political entity.
Axar.az, citing AP, reports that the move follows Hungary’s refusal to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite an ICC warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Orbán argued that Hungary never fully incorporated ICC statutes into its legal system, though international legal experts dispute this reasoning.
Hungary’s departure, which will take at least a year, will make it the only European Union member state outside the ICC. Orbán, a close ally of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, has often clashed with the EU over judicial independence and civil rights.
