The footages shared by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his visits to Yerevan on March 31 and Baku on April 2 have sparked tension within the Armenian public.
Axar.az reports that the German leader shared a panoramic view of both cities from a high point.
In a video shared on Instagram Stories, the old-fashioned view of Yerevan, with its disorganized and chaotic mix of newly built and restored buildings from the independence period, stood out. In contrast, Baku's modern architecture, with its orderly and neat appearance, drew interest.
On Armenian social media, people have criticized the government and the mayor of Yerevan for the city's current state, comparing it to Baku. It's noted that the two cities are starkly different, with Baku experiencing rapid change and orderly renewal over the past 35 years, while in Yerevan, completely different situation is seen.
Armenians are currently pointing out that, against the backdrop of the government’s pro-European stance, there has been little preparation for the visit of the newly elected leader of one of the region's key countries. It is especially stressed that, contrary to claims, the capital is not being developed but rather neglected. Anyone comparing the images would conclude that development in Armenia is progressing slowly, with few innovations, and the city doesn't seem particularly appealing to tourists. This is seen as a negative reflection on Yerevan.
