European Union leaders are preparing for a continued war in Ukraine and hope that admitting the country into the bloc will help it win the conflict with Russia.
Axar.az reports, citing TASS, this was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
However, according to Orbán, such plans would be destructive for both Ukraine and the EU itself.
"Apparently, European countries are preparing for a prolonged war. They claim that Ukraine can win and that EU membership will help it achieve that goal. This is the worst of all possible ideas. Ukraine cannot win this war," said Orban.
He reminded that the European Union was originally created as a “peaceful, not military project.”
“The accession of a new member should serve the cause of peace, not war. However, Brussels believes that admitting Ukraine [to the EU] will allow the war to continue,” the Prime Minister noted.
Orbán confirmed that the Hungarian government is against the rushed admission of Ukraine into the European Union, as it would pose serious risks to security, the economy, and public order.
“Ukraine’s accession will destroy Hungary. It will simply devastate Hungarian families and undo the economic progress achieved over the past 15 years,” the Prime Minister warned.
According to him, in this situation, the upcoming referendum on Ukraine’s accession to the EU—set to begin in Hungary next week—takes on special importance.
“It is important to know the general opinion of all Hungarians, which must then be presented in Brussels,” Orbán concluded.
The nationwide referendum will continue in Hungary until the end of May.
