US President Donald Trump will not attend the NATO summit scheduled for June in The Hague unless the alliance's European members agree to significantly increase their defense spending.

Axar.az informs that Der Spiegel reported this, citing diplomatic sources.

According to the publication, the newly appointed US ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, insists on increasing the allies' defense budget to 5% of GDP at each NATO meeting. Although these demands were initially met with skepticism, especially in Germany, they are now perceived as serious demands.

It is noted that it was Whitaker who voiced the possibility of canceling Trump's trip to the summit if his demands were not met.
