The newly elected Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first mass in the Sistine Chapel.
Axar.az reports that the mass was broadcast live.
The service was held in several languages, including Spanish, the official language of Peru, where Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost spent 11 years before becoming Pope.
The new Pope read the First Letter of Saint Peter in Spanish.
The pontiff made an unusual choice for his first mass: instead of the traditional altar in the Sistine Chapel, which would have its back to the cardinals, he decided to install another altar that would face them directly.
Leo XIV began his homily in his native English and called on the cardinals to recognize the miracles that the Lord has created.
The homily then continued in Italian, and the Pope promised to be a faithful ruler of the Catholic Church.
“God, through your election, has called me in a special way to be the successor of the Prince of the Apostles and has entrusted this treasure to me,” he said.
He said that the Catholic Church must continue its missionary work even in the most remote regions of the world, and in a way, he reiterated the priorities of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
