Turkiye is changing, the world is changing. We are living in a new era and moving toward an even newer one. In such a rapidly changing world, is it possible to move forward with a constitution that preserves the mindset of coup plotters? Haven’t we seen how difficult it is to unite society under a constitution written by coup leaders 40 years ago? Is there anyone who doesn’t realize that many of the problems we face today stem from this coup-era constitution?

Axar.az reports Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters aboard his plane on the way back from a summit in Hungary.

Erdogan stressed the need for a new constitution to replace the current one, drafted under military rule in 1982:

"Throughout my political life, I have emphasized that Turkiye needs a civil, democratic, and liberal constitution. I still hold the same view today. Turkiye can no longer move forward with a constitution written and imposed by coup plotters. What we need now is a constitution proposed by civilians, not those who carried out military coups. As the AKP (Justice and Development Party), we are working on this. We’ve also issued specific instructions on the matter. There is no issue with the first four articles of the constitution. That is, we as the AKP—and most other political parties as well—have no objection to them. Since there is no disagreement on that, we will only focus on laying out the roadmap. I also want to state that we seek this new constitution not for ourselves, but for our country. I have no intention of seeking re-election or running again. Our only concern is how we can enhance our country’s prestige through the steps we take,” Erdogan added.
