Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung has accused China of using financial incentives and infrastructure projects to pressure developing countries into cutting diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognizing Beijing’s claim over the island.
Axar.az, citing Euro News, reports that while Lin presented no concrete evidence, he stated that such tactics are becoming less effective.
Taiwan now has just 12 formal diplomatic allies, mostly small island nations, as many others have shifted allegiance to China under economic and political pressure.
Lin argued that China manipulates the 1971 UN resolution, which granted Beijing the China seat on the Security Council, to claim Taiwan as part of its territory, even though the resolution does not explicitly address Taiwan’s status.
Beijing continues to isolate Taiwan diplomatically, keeping it out of international forums, and refuses to engage with Taiwan’s pro-independence government. Meanwhile, recent deals—like the Cook Islands' secret agreement with China and Somalia’s new passport policy—illustrate Beijing's growing influence among poorer nations through strategic aid and diplomatic pressure, according to the Euro News.
