A blaze erupted in a retirement home in northeastern Spain, killing a 93-year-old man and injuring 19 others, officials said Saturday.

Axar.az report, citing AFP, the fire broke out in a ground-floor room around 11 p.m. on Friday at the home in the northeastern city of Zaragoza, local emergency services said on the social media platform X.

The man died at the scene. At least 19 others were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, authorities said.

The facility houses 132 residents. Emergency workers and local residents helped evacuate occupants, some of whom had to be rescued through broken windows, according to local media reports.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze. Local media reported that an exploding oxygen tank may have triggered the fire.
