A demonstrative refusal of Armenia to return the corpse of an Azerbaijani soldier, despite previously reached agreements, is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Convention and the provisions of additional protocols.

To the information in local media, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hikmat Hajiyev said these words on April 18.

He said the Armenian regime deprived of values of humanism, are abusing and torturing the corpses as the object of revenge and political speculation. Such traces of violence were detected on the corpses of Azerbaijani soldiers that have been recently returned.

“As a result of the inhuman acts of Armenia, more than 4,000 Azerbaijani civilians and servicemen taken captives and hostages during military operations in 1991-1994, are still considered missing.

Though the international organizations mediating in the exchange of bodies of the Azerbaijani and Armenian servicemen confirmed the fact that the body of the Azerbaijani military serviceman is on the Armenian side, it’s unclear why they don’t react against Yerevan’s refusal to return the body. Clear and principled position must be demonstrated by them on such cases.

Official Yerevan saw once again it is isolated in the international community upon its unsuccessful sabotage and military gamble that it began since April 2. Therefore, the steps of the Armenian leadership lost domestic and international community’s confidence and are becoming more stupid, uncertain and dangerous”, Hajiyev said.

The Armenian side refused the initiative of the international mediators to return the body of the Azerbaijani serviceman.
