Bayramov: Russian peacekeepers had no status until 2024

In December 2020, Azerbaijan and Russia held several rounds of intensive negotiations regarding the status of Russian peacekeepers.

Axar.az reports that Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said this in an interview with ITV.

He noted that during the discussion of the document, Azerbaijan included elements that clearly implied all activities were to be carried out on Azerbaijani territory, coordinated with Azerbaijan, and permitted by Azerbaijan:

“In principle, we could have considered this document. However, many of these provisions did not satisfy the Russian side. After lengthy negotiations, it became clear that reaching a common ground would be impossible. Therefore, until 2024 — when Russian peacekeepers left the area — they had no official status.”
