US President Donald Trump said Iran has halted the execution of detained protester Erfan Soltani amid international pressure and growing concern over the fate of demonstrators.
Axar.az, citing CNN, reports that speaking from the Oval Office, Trump claimed he had been told that executions in Iran had stopped, though he did not specify the source of his information.
Soltani, a 26-year-old protester arrested last week in connection with demonstrations near Tehran, was reportedly scheduled to be executed on January 14. His family and human rights groups say he was denied access to a lawyer and an appeal, and that his trial was rushed. While his execution did not take place as planned, relatives say it has not been formally canceled. Norway-based rights group Hengaw reported that the execution has been postponed.
Iranian officials have issued mixed signals. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied that protesters are being executed, calling such reports misinformation, while the attorney general warned that protesters labeled as “terrorists” would face harsh punishment.
The case has fueled tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Trump warning that the US would take “very strong action” if Iran proceeds with executing protesters.
