Karauz: Iran's policy on the corridor is hypocritical

Iran is increasingly isolated in the Caucasus. Therefore, it avoids responding positively to Turkiye and Azerbaijan's proposals, calls, and even the "3+3" platform for peace, stability, and security, and seeks to place Armenia in a dependent position. Currently, Iran approaches the existing situation with a different policy, which brings it into conflict with Russia.

Axar.az reports that retired General Yücel Karauz stated this in an interview.

He added that Iran's current policy is nothing but hypocrisy:

"The Zangezur Corridor is not a threat to Armenia's territorial integrity. No third country can claim that this is their red line. No one intends to change another country's territorial integrity or borders. If Iran was so concerned about borders, why did it remain silent about the occupation of Azerbaijani lands for 30 years? The issue is that the Zangezur Corridor is not a project that harms Iran. Iran just doesn’t want to understand this. If Iran pursues a wise policy, its role in this corridor will increase."

The General also noted that Iran has several concerns about the corridor:

"Iran believes that if the corridor opens, it will lose its revenue and strategic importance. Of course, this is not the case. It is known that Iran's government is based on religion. Among the strategic priorities of the religious government are preventing the strengthening of Turkiye and Azerbaijan and avoiding peace in the region. Whatever Iran says now, it's all empty talk. If the Zangezur Corridor does not open, there will be no state called Armenia. The opening of the Zangezur Corridor is just a matter of time. The Zangezur Corridor will only bring peace to the region."
