Armenia-Russia trade surges amid sanctions

Armenia plays an exceptional role in circumventing Western sanctions imposed on Russia. However, European institutions do not react to this at all. The fact is that before the Russia-Ukraine war, the trade volume between Armenia and Russia did not reach $2 billion. After the war started, the trade turnover between the two countries rose to approximately $9 billion. It is now forecasted that this figure will increase to $15-16 billion.

Axar.az reports that Samad Seyidov, the head of Azerbaijan's delegation to the PACE and a member of the VI convocation of the Milli Majlis, stated this.

He noted that Armenia's population, economy, and potential do not allow directing such a large amount of money into a normal economy:

"It is known to everyone that Armenia is currently engaged in re-export. It is also known in which direction this is going. Unfortunately, the West always applies double standards when it comes to Armenia. This time, the West is doing it cunningly. While sanctions are applied against Russia, the West delivers its goods to this country through Armenia."

Samad Seyidov believes that this fact once again clearly demonstrates the West's double standards and its adherence to international law:

"Azerbaijan also knows this well. Because Armenia has never been independent. Currently, this country is a tool in the hands of both the West and Russia. The West, using Armenia as a tool, wants to destabilize the Caucasus. At the same time, through this country, the West sells its products to a third party. Russia has always used Armenia as a tool. Using the Armenian lobby, the Kremlin solves issues in line with its interests in Western countries. Through them, it gains influence within Western states and pursues a policy to secure its interests.

As a result, Armenia remains far from independence. Because the state that pursues this policy will ultimately lose. Here, the first and second parties will inevitably pursue their own interests, not Armenia's. In contrast, Azerbaijan is always a state that prioritizes and strongly defends its national interests. No matter how widespread double standards are, Azerbaijan's policy of bringing its national interests to the forefront and defending them is the most correct and realistic policy."
